The word "oppression" is really funny

Everyone's done it. I'm doing it right now with the word "cool" in my head and on the phone. Saying a word over and over until it lacks meaning in every context you use it. Suddenly "I'm going to the store." gets the same response from me as "Some girl just fell off the runway on America's next top model!"

Protip: I really like going to the store, but I really REALLY like it when a girl with freckles basically rolls across the top of the water in a giant hamster ball. At that moment, I knew I wanted a giant hamster ball and a pool, so that one day I could be that awesome. And I said "cool." What is wrong with me?

The same thing that's wrong with everyone who speaks english. Each of us is creating our own individual vision of newspeak. I try to mentally count each word I use one day each month. I get distracted halfway through the first meeting of the day and end up with things like "synergize", "leverage" and "skillset." Then I die a little on the inside.

So here's the deal on "oppression." "Oppression" means a lot of things, the one I use most often is: "The use of power or authority in an unjust, cruel, or burdensome manner." It's really emotionally charged. People who aren't used to the word feel something when they hear it. There are lots of other words that mean similar things. "Rampant sexism in the media creates an environment of oppression for women" is a powerful thing to say, even if all those big words tune me out right around "media." You could also say "Rampant sexism in the media promotes a culture of objectifying women's bodies" and express a similarly powerful idea. There's a huge difference.

I don't hear "objectifying" 20,000 times a week. Or ever, by itself. I still feel something when I hear the word. It's pretty difficult to finish a conversation with someone who calls themselves an -ist or has -ist ideas without hearing "oppression" several times. I think anarchists are the worst offenders, but there are a few individuals I would loosely define as feminists who have disabused me of the term too. I don't feel when I hear that word anymore. I can't care about "oppressed" people. I don't even want to hear about people suffering oppression.

Use a thesaurus if you intend for me to care. If you don't intend for me to care, please use the word "losers" to describe the oppressed.
